Website check-up: What is wrong with your website?

We look at your website the way a new customer does, on a phone, in a hurry. Then we write down what is working, what is putting people off, and what to fix first. You keep the list.

20 minutes about your business, with the people who would do the work. No sales pitch.

Sample: Hollis & Park Architects, a made up website of the kind we review.

Sample work by Oiko. Every business shown is made up.

Sound familiar?

  1. I have a feeling the website is not working, but I cannot say why.

It is hard to see your own site as a stranger does. You know what everything means. They only know what is on the screen.

  2. Somebody told me it needs a whole new site. I do not know if that is true.

Sometimes it is. Often a handful of fixes is enough. You should know which before you decide anything.

  3. The people who built it are gone, or do not return my calls.

Then nobody can tell you what is on it, who owns your web address, or what happens if something breaks. A check-up answers those first.

  4. I do not have the time to learn what a good website looks like.

You should not have to. You run a business. Someone should read your site for you and tell you in plain words.

What you get

  • 01

A look on a real phone

Most people will meet your business on a phone. We open your site on one and check that it reads, loads and works, in the order a customer would use it.

  • 02

    A read of every page

What each page says, who it speaks to, and whether a stranger can tell in a few seconds what you do, where, and what to do next.

  • 03

A check of how people get in touch

Can they book, call, ask or pay without hunting? We try every button and every form, and tell you if one does not work.

  • 04

A look at the basics behind the page

Whether the padlock is there, who owns your web address, where the site is kept online, and whether anyone can log in and make changes if needed.

  • 05

A check against your Google listing

Your name, address, hours and phone number on the site, next to what Google shows. We tell you where they disagree.

  • 06

A written list, with the first fixes at the top

Plain words, in the order we would do them, with what each one is for. You can hand it to us, to your nephew, or to anyone else.

Who it is for

How it works

  1. Step 1

You tell us about the website

A 20 minute conversation about your business. What the site is for, what you hoped it would do, and what worries you about it. You send us the address, and nothing else.

    You receive

    • A written note of what you asked us to look at
    • Confirmation of exactly what we will and will not touch
  2. Step 2

We go through it as a customer would

On a phone and on a computer. We try to find your hours, book, pay and get in touch. We read every page and write down each place we stumbled.

    You receive

    • Notes from the walk through, with screenshots of each problem
  3. Step 3

We check the parts customers do not see

The padlock, your web address, where the site is kept, who has the logins, and whether the details match your Google listing. We do not log in to anything of yours, and we do not change anything.

    You receive

    • A short plain note on who owns what
    • A list of anything that disagrees with your Google listing
  4. Step 4

    We write it down

A written review in plain words. What works and should stay. What is putting people off. What to fix first, second and third, and what can wait.

    You receive

    • The written review, with screenshots
    • A list of fixes in the order we would do them
    • A line on each one: what it is, why it matters, how big a job it is
  5. Step 5

We go through it with you

A conversation to read it together and answer your questions. If you want us to do the fixes, we can. If you would rather give the list to someone else, it is yours.

    You receive

    • Your questions answered, in plain words
    • The list to use however you like, with no strings attached

What you own

Your web address, accounts and files belong to you from day one. If you leave us, you keep all of it.

Questions owners ask

What do I get at the end?

A written review you can read in one sitting, with screenshots, and a numbered list of what to fix, in order. It is yours to keep and to use with anyone.

Do I have to hire you to fix what you find?

No. The list is written so that any competent person can follow it. If you want us to do the work, we will say what is involved. If you do not, that is fine, and the list is still yours.

Do you need a login to my website?

No. We review it from the outside, as a customer does. If we need to see something behind the scenes, we ask you first, and we change nothing.

How long does it take?

It depends on how big the site is. We tell you when we have read it, and agree the date before we begin.

Will you tell me if I need a new website?

Yes, in plain words. If the fixes are small, we say so and list them. If the site would be better rebuilt, we say that too, and explain why.

My site was built on Wix, Squarespace or WordPress. Can you still review it?

Yes. We review what a customer sees and what the site does. The tool it was made with matters only when it limits what can be fixed, and if so, we say so.

Can you check things I am worried about?

Yes, tell us at the start. If you think the site is slow, the booking form is broken, or something looks off on your phone, we look at that first.
