How we would build it

This is a sample for a made-up business. There is no client and no result to report: this is how we would plan and build it for a real one.

The problem

A hair salon cannot answer the phone with color on its hands. Calls go to voicemail, clients who want a particular stylist cannot see when she is open, and an hour of color that a client does not turn up for is an hour nobody gets paid for.

What we built

For our sample salon, Juniper & Vale Hair, we would build a one page website with the services and a booking box that lets a client pick the stylist, the service and a time, and holds color appointments with a small deposit.

Problem and answer

  • Clients want their own stylist, and the phone cannot show who is available.

The booking box shows each stylist's open times. A client picks the person they trust, or chooses anyone who is available.

  • A color appointment is missed, and the stylist loses half a day.

Color visits ask for a small deposit that comes off the bill on the day. The salon decides the amount and the cancel rule.

  • Color takes different amounts of time, and the book gets double booked.

Each service has its own length. When a client picks color, the box blocks the full time that stylist needs.

  • Clients forget, and the chair sits empty.

A text goes out the day before. A client who cannot come can cancel with one tap, and the time opens up again.

  • The same questions come in all week, such as how long color takes.

A message button on the page lets clients ask. Common answers are written once, and the owner sees every message in one list.

How it works

  1. 01A client picks a service, a stylist and a time on their phone.
  2. 02For color, a small deposit holds the time. Everything else books with no payment.
  3. 03The booking appears in that stylist's calendar, and the client gets a text to confirm.
  4. 04The day before, a reminder goes out. A cancelled time opens up again.
  5. 05The owner changes services, hours and stylists by sending us a message.

Works with

  • Google Calendar, one for each stylist
  • Google Business Profile, so the hours on Google match the page
  • Stripe or Square, for color deposits and card payments into the salon's own account
  • A text message service, for the confirm and reminder texts
  • Mailchimp, if the owner wants a note to regulars before a busy week

The plan we would follow

  1. Week 1We sit with the owner and the stylists, learn how a Saturday works, and agree what the page has to do.
  2. Weeks 2 and 3We write the services in plain words, choose the photos, and build the page and the booking box.
  3. Week 4The stylists try it with test bookings, and we fix what gets in their way.
  4. Week 5We connect the calendars, the deposit and the texts, and check it on an older phone.
  5. Week 6Launch, with a short walk through for whoever opens and closes the salon.

What the owner keeps

  • The website and everything on it
  • The domain name, in the salon's own account
  • The calendar, payment and text accounts, all in the salon's name
  • Every client booking and note, in the salon's hands, never ours
