Oriel Hair: a logo and look for a hair salon
A neighborhood salon wanted to look as good as the work on the chair. The look had to be warm, simple and easy to spot from across the street.
The O is split down the middle, with the right half sliding a little lower than the left. It is a hair part, the first line a stylist draws.
Logo and look
The logo, four ways
One mark, set so it works wherever it lands. Every version is one drawing, so it never goes out of step.

How we would build it
This is a sample for a made-up business. There is no client and no result to report: this is how we would plan and build it for a real one.
The problem
A hair salon sells how people feel when they leave. The chairs can be lovely and the stylists excellent, but the sign is one style, the booking page another and the shopping bag a third. A new client cannot tell that it is all the same place, so the salon looks smaller than the work deserves.
What we built
For Oriel Hair, a made up neighborhood salon, we would draw a logo and look from the first thing a stylist does: draw a part. The letter O is split down the middle, with the right half sliding a little lower than the left. Then we would carry it onto the storefront, the bag, the appointment card and the website.
Problem and answer
The salon name is hard to spot over a busy storefront.
One board over the door with the mark, the name and a short line under it, in dark type on a pale ground. It reads from across the street.
A fine, thin mark disappears on a bag or a phone.
The O is drawn with heavy strokes and one clear split. We check it at 32 pixels, the size of a browser tab or a social photo, and it stays clear.
Printing in many colors costs more and drifts between printers.
Five colors, each with a name, a job and a code. The shopping bag is one color on a dark bag, and the one color logo is built for that.
Clients forget the next appointment, and the card they were handed looks nothing like the salon.
An appointment card in the same colors and type, with the day and time in large letters so it is easy to read in a wallet.
Nobody on the team knows which fonts to use.
Two typefaces. DM Serif Display for the name and headings, and Jost for booking pages, cards and everything you read.
How it works
- 01The owner sends photos of the storefront, a bag, a card and the current booking page.
- 02We show a few ideas for the mark on a sign and a bag. The owner picks one.
- 03We set the colors and type, then draw the logo onto each real thing: storefront, shopping bag, appointment card, business card and website.
- 04The owner receives every file and a short guide to hand to a sign maker or a printer.
Works with
- A sign maker, for the board over the door
- A printer, for bags, appointment cards and business cards
- The salon's website header and booking page
- A social profile, where the mark on its own fits the round photo
The plan we would follow
- Week 1We look at the shop, the bags and the cards as they are now. Then we draw a few marks and put them on a sign and a bag. The owner chooses.
- Week 2We refine the mark, set the colors and typefaces, and draw each use at its real size.
- Week 3We hand over every file and the guide, and brief the sign maker and the printer if the owner wants us to.
What the owner keeps
- The logo in every version and file type
- The color codes and the font names
- A short guide for sign makers and printers
- The artwork for the storefront, bag, appointment card and business card
