Halden Physiotherapy: a logo and look for a clinic
People walk into a physio clinic worried. The look needed to be calm, clear and easy to read on a handout. We built it around a single step up.
The crossbar of the H does not sit flat. It steps up from left to right, the way a patient gets better one week at a time.
Logo and look
The logo, four ways
One mark, set so it works wherever it lands. Every version is one drawing, so it never goes out of step.

How we would build it
This is a sample for a made-up business. There is no client and no result to report: this is how we would plan and build it for a real one.
The problem
People walk into a physiotherapy clinic worried about their back or their knee. A clinic with a hurried look, in mixed fonts and harsh colors, does not help. The handouts are photocopies of photocopies, and the sign by the door looks like every other one.
What we built
For Halden Physiotherapy, a made up clinic, we would draw a logo and look that is calm, clear and warm. The crossbar of the H steps up from left to right, the way a patient gets better a week at a time. Cool blues carry the look, with one warm signal color.
Problem and answer
A nervous patient needs to feel welcome before they open the door.
A quiet door plate that says you are in the right place, in calm colors and a clear mark.
Exercise handouts are hard to read.
A handout with large type, plenty of space and one clear color. The body text is set in Instrument Serif.
Staff look like they work for different places.
A small mark on the chest of a polo, stitched in one color. The same mark appears on the card and the website.
Too many colors make a clinic feel busy.
Five colors, with Signal used sparingly. Deep sea, Tide, Mist and Sand do the work.
The logo has to work as a tiny photo.
The mark only version stays clear at 32 pixels, so it fits a browser tab or a social photo.
How it works
- 01The owner shows us the door, the handouts and the forms as they are.
- 02We show a few marks on a door plate and a handout. The owner picks one.
- 03We set the colors and the typefaces, then draw the door plate, polo, handout, card and website header.
- 04The owner gets every file and a one page guide, so any printer or embroiderer gets it right the first time.
Works with
- A sign maker, for the door plate
- An embroiderer, for the staff polo, in one color thread
- A printer, for exercise handouts and business cards
- The clinic's website header and a social profile
The plan we would follow
- Week 1We visit the clinic, look at the handouts and the door, and agree how patients should feel on arrival. Then we draw a few marks and show them on a door plate and a handout. The owner chooses.
- Week 2We refine the mark, set the colors and typefaces, and draw the door plate, polo, handout, card and website header. We print the handout to check it reads.
- Week 3We hand over every file and the guide, and brief the sign maker and the embroiderer if the owner wants.
What the owner keeps
- The logo in every version and file type
- The color codes and the font names
- The one page guide
- The artwork for the door plate, polo, handout and card
